The Case Of The Missing Socks
67For all of you that have raised kids and those who are doing it now; have you ever wondered if there was some sort of sock bandit stealing your kid's socks from your washer or dryer? I know for a fact that matched pairs would go in the washer or dryer, but one,two or perhaps three socks from what once was a pair suddenly vanished. Let me once and for all try to shed some light on this sock situation, so you don't spend time wondering That you're loosing it; that is your mind.
First of all, I'll start with the dryer. Don't do this but if you were to just go right now and completely dismantle your dryer, you may just find some couple-less socks perhaps along with some missing bikini undies lying in a pile of lint under the tumbler. Are you asking yourself; "How is that possible"? I"ll tell you why. Sometimes small clothing like socks make their way out of the dryer housing basket and into the blower housing via an open lit screen. This only will happen when the lint screen is loose or you forget to put it back after cleaning it out.
Yes, you may think that the dryer is usually the sock bandit, and that's because we only miss them when we're folding clothes after their dryed. Not so fast guys. The washing machine I would say is the leader in thefts of socks and other small articles of clothing. Let me explain this also. In many, but not all washer models, socks and more can float over a washer tub when the machine is agitating and then sometimes get sucked right into the washing machines pump or even get tangled up in the motor. If this happens, it's time to call the repairperson . Okay this is how some socks in the washer are found, but still what can happen is some socks and perhaps bikini underwear can float over the washer basket and smack down into the drain if the machine is too full which makes the water level higher that it should be. Sometimes they will go into the drain and make it into the sewer system or get lucky and be stuck in limbo forever between the washer's basket and housing units.
The older model machines are the worst offenders of lost socks and underwear. One tip is to use safety pins to keep socks together. The chances of them getting away is much less because together of course they become a larger item.
Just remember some of these small tips so you won't have to give your kids mismatched socks, or have to wear you boyfriends or hubbys underwear when you have lost all yours.

HA! I was just thinking about this very topic last night. Quite a mystery.
Thanks for the fine article :)
wow I didn't have a clue those things could happen...Thanks hun...re minds me of a bra that got stuck to my friends hubby's sweater whilst lying on the couch full of dried clothes...She asked him to go pick up a prescription at the drug store...and while he was standing in line someone behind him pulled it off and asked he was looking for it? He he...or something like that...G-Ma :O) Hugs & Peace
Good mystery solver, here I always blamed it on the dogs. They love those, panties and undies among other unmentionables I won't go into here. thanks
Love the picture of the sock on the butt! Too Funny.
Missing socks... I usually find the kids in the toy box or the sand box. Mine in a sleeve, and my husbands under the bed. Just can't blame it on the machine, as much as I would like to.
its too funny...
My socks always seem to go missing. In California many times we just wear slip on shoes without socks during the warm months of the year, which sort of helps. I hate when my favorite knee socks go missing though.
Thank goodness! The socks have been found. It is good to know that the mystery has been solved.
laringo, at my house, the laundry in general is a source of conspiracy as I of course wonder where my socks went, my super cool t-shirts, and I think sometimes, my wife just hangs up the clothes I throw in the dirty clothes to make it seem like she is doing laundry. I don't know, I can't prove a thing.
I AGREE --LARINGO--AS A WASHER/DRYER REPAIR MAN I SEE THIS SITUATION ON A DAILY BASIS,SOMETIMES THE SOCK FIND ITS WAY AND GET STUCK IN THE PUMP,SO AFTER THE WASH IS COMPLETE THE CLOTHES ARE STILL WET BECAUSE THE WASHER DID NOT PUMP OUT,IN RECENT YEAR I HAVE REMOVED MORE THONGS THAN SOCKS FROM WASHING MACHINE PUMPS.GREAT HUB,KEEP THEM COMING.
I have often wondered about this. . .in a family of 5, there are always socks missing! Funny.
Wow so that's what happens.I have been convinced the washer has been eating them somehow.I have around 46 single socks not one pair.Grrrrr.Lol that was great insight for me.You have helped me solve one of the greatest mysteries in my life time.
Perhaps the manufacturers are in a conspiracy with the washer/dryer repair guys :)
Anyway, here's a solution to what to do with single socks http://hubpages.com/_2ecigsmcq9jbj/hub/Orphan-Sock
Hope it inspires creativity! Thanks for sharing this practical hub.
Funnnny hub! I did the pin-the-socks-together thing when the kids were at home. But then they left home and I stopped doing it. Started buying only one kind of sock in one color, which saves having to pair them up after drying. Never a mismatch. Only way I know a sock has gone MIA is toward the end of a week when I've been too busy to do laundry and all that's in the drawer is one lonely orphan sock. But I don't think it's the washer OR the dryer that eats 'em. I think they just decide to hide out. Don't want their weekly "bath", so they slip under the bed or the dresser until after laundry day. One hid out in the toe of a pair of shoes I rarely wear. Have to watch that one so the others don't get ideas. ;}
My cats eat them and hide them. I found half a dozen in the livingroom under an amplifier. Strange cats.
Like the hub!
I've just started a socks without mates hub, making it sort of like a single's site. Well they are single socks. You can check it out every so often and see if any of yours ended up in my laundry

Thanks for this helpful information. Now what if we check our washer and dryer and still have those missing socks left? What then? I have a basket full of single socks waiting for their buddies. I think some day I will just have to let them go lol.
