All you need to know about Perfumes and Colognes
By laringo
I have to admit that I'm a sucker for perfumes and colognes and currently have several in my collection. There is just something about the sweet smell of a lovely perfume that makes me feel good. Even when my husband puts on his Old Spice or Aqua Velva, I find myself following him around the house. Oh I must say that I have tried to update my other half with newer colognes; and they do smell good on him, but the Old School stuff is made for him. Anyway getting back to perfumes, here a a few rules of thumb to follow and ones that I live by.
1. Never over-spray yourself. Spritzing over and over again will not make the perfume or cologne last any longer during the day. My advice is to wait about 5 to 6 hours and reapply, but very sparingly. Remember you may not be able to smell perfume on yourself after several hours but those who you come in contact with do.
2. Layering different scents is okay to do as long as they are not strong and over-powering by themselves. I like to layer floral scents together because to me they fuse very nicely.
3. When storing your perfumes, do it with great care so it can last for years. Do this by keeping them away from temperature extremes, especially heat which can change and turn the scent which usually makes it smell rancid.
4. A big no-no is to buy a fragrance just because you like the way it smells on someone else. As you may know, everyones body chemistry is different so what smells good on one person, can smell not so attractive on the next. Always try a perfume on yourself and let it settle into your skin for a few minutes to see what the reaction is going to be. At many department stores the sales clerk will spray a card for you to smell scents, but if I'm not sure and am interested in buying it, I will spray on the inside of my wrist.
5. My final advice when buying a fragrance is to first of all; don't buy those cheapo sprays that come in a can and are named closely after a popular brand name perfume. They are a waste of money and are more alcohol then scent. Also if someone comes up to you on the street and trys to sell you perfume that's been stored in the back of a car and it's 90 degrees outside, run as fast as you can and don't look back because the fake perfume peddlers are persistent.
I hope you come away with some new tips on perfumes and colognes in this Hub. Also all you guys out there, don't feel left out. The same rules apply to you.
Try and then decide.

I never thought layering is ok, maybe because I don't have perfume as many as yours and so I never tried it yet =)
Susan I think your teenagers are evaporating your perfumes. They must smell good.
Charia, yes layering is very nice but you just have to be careful not to overdo it soft scents with some of the scents ingredients always work for me.
I think #5 was the best one on here!! You'll end up in the back of someone's trunk really fast messing with those guys trying to solicit "perfume" out of their cars....
As far as layering, I love to do it. Bath and Body Works' Black Raspberry and Vanilla, with Paris Hilton's Paris Hilton perfume mixes so well for me....
Hello BeautySpeaks, thanks for stopping by and giving me the tip of Bath and Body works. I may just have to try this combo.
Hi laringo, Enjoyed your article, totally agree with the aroma therapy perfume and cologne can supply. :) I use perfume quite frequently when I need to go some place and am not feeling well. Kind of gets me up on my feet and moving.
I left you fan mail but am not sure you received it, so just want to repeat that you have a very nice selection of articles that I look forward to reading.

Hello Jen; is that ok to call you that? Anyway I am a perfume fanatic and love to smell it and wear it. I wear it everyday because i love to smell good and other people ,men and women are always commenting on it in a very positive way. Thank you for stopping be my Hub. I plan on visiting your Hubs and learning new things.
Jen is just fine laringo. I had to laugh because I receive the same compliments. Sometimes I worry I might have too much on, but am assured I'm not overdoing it, to my relief.
I do find that at certain times I have to wear less or none at all out of concern for those in my congregation who suffer from allergies and sensitivies to perfume.
Comes down to deciding whether I want to feel good about the way I smell or feel good about the way those around me feel. LOL I pick them over me and if I know I'm going to be in close quarters, I barely wear any and let them know I have some on so that they don't come to close.

Too true, too true!
Thanks for agreeing Richard.
I have recently stumbled into the realm of perfume sampling, so this article was just what the doctor ordered LOL...thanks for the tips.
Enelle, I just love a nice smelling perfume. What woman doesn't. Thanks for stopping by with your comments.
thnks 4 helping me
I am very picky when it comes to using perfume. It is difficult because I have a certain criteria that I go by with my taste. Thank you for the tip. More power.
Enelle,
You hit on all of my questions - thank you! I wanted to save money and try some of those items - thank you for saving me the funds.
I do love perfumes and i love your hub too. Thanks God i've never bought canned perfumes, ha...ha...
I really like cologne and I give perfume as Christmas presents to my close friends that are girls but this was an interesting article I liked it I thought it was informative. I have about 5 colognes I have Ed hardy love and luck, abercrombie cologne 15, Calvin Klein eternity, polo red, white and blue and AXE dark temptation. I have to sort them out by the week but I wear all of them they smell really good I just want to get abercrombie FIERCE and hollister co. EPIC
I do like using perfumes. I bought Cologne Spray from Zumali Online Shopping for 50% discount price.
I am truly a lover of breathtaking fragrances,so I couldn't resist reading this hub. Because there are so many fragrances around, initially when someone is shopping for perfumes or colognes, it's difficult to say which smells better or the best -- in fact, they all have their own unique scent. However, after wearing each of them on separate occasions, we can then determine which fragrance smells better on us.

Interesting article. I live in a warm climate and have a lot of trouble with my perfumes evaporating (it could be my teenagers too, though...) I usually try to buy smaller amounts, because of this, as I use them up a lot faster.
